TRENDnet ADSL Fast Ethernet/USB Combination Modem Router TDM-C400 (Blue)

Top positive review

The Trendnet TDM-C400 is unique in that setup can be anywhere from totally automatic to completely manual — A joy to use for noobs and geeks alike.

All I did was use the quick config to set up the bridging to my router (setting it up as a passthrough) and then set up my router to do the DSL login, disable the modem’s DHCP server and that was that. The reason I bridged the modem to my router is because my network was already set up and I didn’t want to have to set it up all over again, or I would’ve just used the DHCP server part of it, too.

The only thing keeping this product from receiving five stars from me is the interface can be confusing because of the myriad choices you can make. My advice is the same as what the manual recommends: use automatic settings where possible. It shouldn’t defeat the determined noob, and it should cause waves of pleasure to wash over the experienced uber-geek.

Overall, it is a solid choice for a complete DSL/Network solution!

Top critical review

This modem/router can do a lot than most of people even thought of. But, unless you are very technical, you should limit yourself to the quick configuration level. Anything else is too complicated to set up. I had interacted with 4 tech supports. They don’t let you wait and they are polite but they can not help you on advanced settings and they claim the product is End of Life. What you get is what will be like. So, I had to figure out most advance settings by myself.

MAKE SURE you don’t use USB interface as the quick start guide tells you. It is not necessary and most likely the usb software CD won’t install any way.

You just connect C-400 to your computer directly with Ethernet cable. After manually setting the IP address to 192.168.0.11, you can begin the setup. For simple user, the initial installation should only take 5 minutes.

But, if you want to do more, it is an entirely different story.

Important setting options:

(1) Set it as a DSL modem only: Tech support did not know how. I found a review on [. ].

Under quick configuration:

Encapsulation: 1483 Bridged IP LLC
Bridge: Enabled
IGMP: Enabled
Use DHCP: Disabled
Default Route: Disabled

(2) Use it as a router but want to set parental control:

You need to enable bridge filter under service. (3 tech supports don’t know this). You only can set it when the PC to be control in on line because you need to use Mac to block the internet access. C-400 allows you to set as many rules as possible while other routers mostly let you set only one.

(3) Use it as a router but want to set SNTP to get the time from internet:

Under Service, click SNTP and enter the domain name: [. ]. You need to enable it (which the tech support did not instruct me so). After this, under Home, with modify: you need to select time zone (which Tech support said no).

Without STNP, every time the modem loses power, the time will not be accurate.

I teamed up C-400 with a gigabit switch and a gigabit Ethernet wireless-n AP. The combined 3-piece solution outperformed Netgear DGND 3300 (3-in-1 solution). This issue of Netgear DGND3300 is that, although wireless-n connection claims 270mbps, the transfer between LAN and WAN is limited to 16 mbps. If you have a networked hard drive, it is better not to use this integrated solution because one bottleneck will defeat the purpose of having wireless-n. Initially, I would team up C-400 (as a dsl modem) with Neargear WNDR3700 (a 2-iece solution). But, the tech supports did not know how to set it up as a passthru modem. So, I purchased gigabit switch instead.

I upgraded my ATT DSL to 6 mbps and C-400 operates at full link speed. Now, I can stream HD movie from netflix with excellent video quality.

I recommend this product only if you just want a simple DSL modem router with no advance settings.

Price:
couldn’t find another DSL modem that was cheaper with a decent review/reliability.
i chose to ignore the one review about the modem not working after a week.
$37 price was too good. hook, line, and sinker.

getting it working:
the review by L. Yang «Dragon» helped me make the trendnet a «modem only» bridge to my linksys 54g wireless router. the trendnet, out of the box, will work as a router. but didn’t work when connected to my linksys.
had the linksys do PPPoE (the protocol required by AT&T to access your DSL internet). this required my linksys getting a easy firmware update off the linksys site. OLD firmware did not have PPPoE option.
trendnet can do PPPoE, but the trendnet does not do wireless internet.

for a week and a half, the trendnet provided internet that was blazing fast (as blazing fast as 2.5Mbps according to speakeasy can be). not a single page was not found (page not found was common on my friend’s AT&T provided 2wire modem/router). fantastic when it was working.

obviously you can’t compare it to cable’s 45Mbps or a cable modem’s ease of installation or lack of installation (plug in cords and it works). both have different value for different customers.

result:
after a week, our internet just quit working one day (the 2nd day of 2010 World Cup. the reason we got AT&T DSL. [. ]!). called it in to AT&T and they let us know it was an outage in our area.

but 4 days after the outage should’ve been fixed, with the same settings on both the trendnet and linksys, the internet still wasn’t accesible. called it in and they let me know the outage had been fixed in our area. uh oh.

i wasted so much time (which is not worth a $37 price tag)with days of calls to tech support (basic support is free. AT&T charges $129 for 5 days of support if your modem is not from them/3rd party. their modem is $90), hours spent tweaking settings with my moderate knowledge of networking options by myself (with and without the linksys. restarting all devices many times. etc), and just waiting for time to fix it.

what had messed me up was the trendnet summary page was telling me
#1: i had a connection,
#2 PPPoE had gone through,
#3 i had 3Mbps down & 0.5Mbps up,
#4 and AT&T telling me communication with modem was great and that i was authenticating via PPPoE
when i clearly was not able to use the world wide web.

which led me to:
i borrowed a 2wire modem/wirless router (an AT&T provided modem for $125) from another customer, and i was able to get on the internet with no problem (with my account info, not the friend’s).

argggghhhhhh, so much time wasted for a modem that was tricking me into believing it was functioning. i had internet for my first week or so. and no internet for the next 2 weeks. not a great way to spend your first month of service.
regret like this is hindsight, but you should maybe go for the Actiontec GT701D for $43.

buying a Rosewill RNX-EasyN4 gave me too much confidence of «off» brand equipment. the Rosewill wireless-N router for $40 was the best purchase ever!
